TRO Buyer’s Guide: Crews Control

For purposes of this Buyer’s Guide, total retirement outsourcing (TRO) refers to the combination of service offerings relating to retirement plans: defined contribution, including employee stock ownership plans (ESOPs); defined benefit; and deferred compensation. It does not include payroll-only plans. Providers detailed here were asked to indicate whether the services provided were performed internally, through some formal strategic partnership, or “externally.” In this case, “external” refers to a situation where that service is outsourced totally—a situation where that service is offered, and through which providers may provide references, but it remains, in the provider’s estimation, something that is really outside their “core” offerings.

Most of the providers in this year’s guide have been offering those services for more than a decade, and a handful for more than two decades. In most cases, TRO represents somewhere between 10% and 20% of each firm’s business, based on number of plans, and most added clients in that category last year (some significantly).
