What HR policy did Henry Ford announce to motivate his workers to endure the drudgery of the assembly line?

In 1914, when industrial workers were averaging about eleven dollars a week, Ford announced that his employees would be paid five dollars for an eight-hour day. His purpose was not only to motivate his workers to endure the drudgery of the assembly line but to bring his automobiles within their economic reach.     

The policy made Ford famous around the world, and it seemed for a time that he might have a political career.
