Groom Lawyer Rejoins Firm Following Senate Staff Role

Michael Kreps has rejoined the Groom Law Group to help expand the premier policy practice.

Employee benefits law firm Groom Law Group announced Michael Kreps has once again joined the firm as a principal after spending five years on the staff of the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP), where he managed all aspects of the committee’s retirement agenda.

Kreps began his legal career at Groom Law Group, specializing in issues related to fiduciary responsibility and plan funding and restructuring. While on the Senate HELP Committee staff, Kreps had primary staff responsibility for supporting and delivering key pieces of pension legislation, including the pension investment provisions of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act; the Pension Relief Act of 2010; the funding stabilization and Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation reform provisions of the MAP-21 Act of 2012; and the CSEC Pension Flexibility Act.

Kreps also led the committee’s oversight of the regulatory activities of the Department of Labor (DOL), as well as the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC) and other retirement-related agencies.

Discussing his new role, Kreps said this is “a critical time for the future of retirement and health policy,” and that he looks forward to working with Groom clients to build better performing and carefully constructed benefits packages.
