TRIVIAL PURSUITS: Why Are Shamrocks Associated With St. Patrick’s Day?

On St Patrick's Day, it is customary to wear shamrocks, green clothing or green accessories.

Why are shamrocks associated with St. Patrick’s Day?

First of all, St. Patrick is the foremost patron saint of Ireland due to his conversion of many Irish to the Christian faith. St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated on March 17, his traditional death date.

One interesting point of trivia is that St. Patrick was born in England, not Ireland.

The reason shamrocks are associated with St. Patrick’s Day is old writings suggest that St Patrick used the shamrock, a three-leaved plant, to explain the Holy Trinity to the Irish.
