In March, the Consumer Price Index for all urban consumers increased 0.4%, seasonally adjusted, and rose 3.5% over the last 12 months, not seasonally adjusted, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. The index for all items less food and energy increased 0.4% in March; up 3.8% over the year.
MARKET MIRROR
Wednesday, the Dow fell 422.16 points (1.09%) to close at 38,461.51, the Nasdaq fell 136.28 points (0.84%) to close at 16,170.36 and the S&P 500 fell 49.27 points (0.95%) to close at 5,160.64. The Russell 2000 fell 52.41 points (2.52%) to close at 2,028.39, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index fell 563.39 points (1.07%) to close at 51,869.82.

The 10-year Treasury note fell 1 26/32, bringing the yield to 4.550%. The 30-year Treasury bond fell 1 31/32, bringing the yield to 4.624%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1893, Dean Acheson—U.S. secretary of state from 1949 to 1953, adviser to four presidents, and the principal creator of U.S. foreign policy in the Cold War period—was born. In 1895, Cuban activist and patriot José Julián Martí landed in Cuba at the head of an invading force whose goal was to win independence from Spain. In 1951, President Harry S. Truman relieved General Douglas MacArthur of his command of U.N. and U.S. forces during the Korean War. In 1953, mathematician Andrew John Wiles, deviser of a proof of Fermat’s last theorem, was born in Cambridge, England. In 1961, the trial of Nazi leader Adolf Eichmann began in Jerusalem; eight months later it ended with the only death sentence ever imposed by an Israeli court. In 1970, Apollo 13 was launched from Cape Kennedy (now Cape Canaveral), Florida; although scheduled to be the third lunar landing, the mission was aborted after an oxygen tank exploded en route to the Moon.
