In the week ending April 5, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial jobless claims was 223,000, an increase of 4,000 from the previous week’s unrevised level of 219,000, the Department of Labor reported. The four-week moving average was 223,000, unchanged from the previous week’s unrevised average of 223,000.
Interest on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 6.64% for the week ending April 3, down from last week when it averaged 6.65%, Freddie Mac reported. A year ago at this time, the 30-year FRM averaged 6.82%. Interest on a 15-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 5.82%, down from last week when it averaged 5.89%. A year ago at this time, the 15-year FRM averaged 6.06%.

Thursday, the Dow fell 1,014.79 points (2.50%) to close at 39,593.66, the Nasdaq fell 737.66 points (4.31%) to close at 16,387.31 and the S&P 500 fell 188.85 points (3.46%) to close at 5,268.05. The Russell 2000 fell 81.77 points (4.27%) to close at 1,831.39, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index fell 1,948.06 points (3.59%) to close at 52,355.58.
The 10-year Treasury note decreased 28/32, bringing the yield to 4.436%. The 30-year Treasury bond decreased 1 32/32, bringing the yield to 4.864%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1895, Cuban activist and patriot José Julián Martí landed in Cuba at the head of an invading force whose goal was to win independence from Spain. In 1951, President Harry S. Truman relieved General Douglas MacArthur of his command of U.N. and U.S. forces during the Korean War. In 1961, the trial of Nazi leader Adolf Eichmann began in Jerusalem; eight months later it ended with the only death sentence ever imposed by an Israeli court. In 1970, Apollo 13 was launched from Cape Kennedy (now Cape Canaveral), Florida; although scheduled to be the third lunar landing, the mission was aborted after an oxygen tank exploded en route to the Moon. In 1979, Ugandan President Idi Amin fled the country as Tanzanian-led forces neared Kampala. In 2013, dancer Maria Tallchief died at age 88.
