Wednesday, the Dow was up 53.62 points (0.16%) at 33,730.89, the Nasdaq fell 138.26 points (0.99%) to 13,857.84, and the S&P 500 closed 16.93 points (0.41%) lower at 4,124.66. The Russell 2000 increased 18.79 points (0.84%) to 2,247.72, and the Wilshire 5000 lost 150.51 points (0.35%) to finish at 43,297.79.

The price of the 10-year Treasury note was down 1/32, increasing its yield to 1.632%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond decreased 4/32, bringing its yield up to 2.318%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1817, the first American school for the deaf was opened in Hartford, Connecticut. In 1892, the General Electric Company was organized. In 1912, the British ocean liner Titanic sank into the North Atlantic Ocean about 400 miles south of Newfoundland, Canada. In 1947, Jackie Robinson played his first major league baseball game for the Brooklyn Dodgers. Previously he had only appeared in exhibition games. In 1952, President Harry Truman signed the official Japanese peace treaty. In 1956, the worlds’ first, all-color TV station was dedicated. It was WNBQ-TV in Chicago and is now WMAQ-TV. In 1994, the World Trade Organization was established. In 1997, Christopher Reeve received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2013, two bombs went off near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, killing three spectators and wounding more than 260 other people in attendance.
