U.S. retail and food services sales for March 2024 were $709.6 billion, up 0.7% from the previous month, the Census Bureau reported.

Monday, the Dow fell 248.13 points (0.65%) to close at 37,735.11, the Nasdaq fell 290.08 points (1.79%) to close at 15,885.02 and the S&P 500 fell 61.59 points (1.20%) to close at 5,061.82. The Russell 2000 fell 27.47 points (1.37%) to close at 1,975.71, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index fell 655.38 points (1.27%) to close at 50,804.28.
The 10-year Treasury note fell 6/32, bringing the yield to 4.607%. The 30-year Treasury bond fell 1 3/32, bringing the yield to 4.720%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1838, French forces occupied Veracruz, Mexico, during the Pastry War; the conflict began after a French pastry cook living near Mexico City claimed that Mexican army officers had damaged his restaurant. In 1908, Natural Bridges National Monument was formally established in southeastern Utah. In 1912, American aviator Harriet Quimby became the first woman to fly across the English Channel, guiding her French monoplane through heavy overcast from Dover, England, to Hardelot, France. In 1917, Vladimir Lenin ended his 17-year exile and returned to Russia to form a provisional government. In 1922, British author Kingsley Amis, who created in his first novel, “Lucky Jim,” a comic figure that became a household word in the U.K. in the 1950s was born. In 1943, Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann discovered the psychedelic properties of LSD, a drug he had first synthesized in 1938. In 1947, basketball player Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who won five NBA championships with the Los Angeles Lakers was born. In 1948, in order to restore the economy of Europe after World War II, 16 European countries formed the Organization for European Economic Co-operation (later the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development). In 1962, journalist Walter Cronkite became anchor of the CBS Evening News, a position he held for nearly two decades. In 2003, at age 40, Michael Jordan, played his last game in the NBA. In 2014, the South Korean ferry Sewol, traveling from Inch’ŏn to Cheju, capsized and sank, killing 304 people, most of whom were high schoolers. In 2017, one of the deadliest mass shootings in the U.S. occurred: 33 people, including the shooter, were killed on the Blacksburg, Virginia, campus of Virginia Tech.
