Wednesday, the Dow fell 699.57 points (1.73%) to close at 39,669.39, the Nasdaq fell 516.01 points (3.07%) to close at 16,307.16 and the S&P 500 fell 120.93 points (2.24%) to close at 5,275.70. The Russell 2000 fell 19.44 points (1.03%) to close at 1,863.48, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index fell 1,129.18 points (2.10%) to close at 52,523.34.
The 10-year Treasury note increased 5/32, bringing the yield to 4.282%. The 30-year Treasury bond increased 29/32, bringing the yield to 4.732%.

In 2003, Anneli Jäätteenmäki was sworn in as prime minister of Finland, which became the second country (after New Zealand) to install a woman as head of both state and government. In 2011, the TV show “Game of Thrones,” based on George R.R. Martin’s fantasy book series “A Song of Ice and Fire,” debuted on HBO. In 2014, Colombian novelist Gabriel Garcia Marquez—winner of the Novel Prize for Literature—died at age 87. In 2018, first lady Barbara Bush—wife of George H.W. Bush, 41st president of the U.S.—died at age 92.
