Tuesday, the Census Bureau will report new home sales for March and the Conference Board will report the Consumer Confidence Index for April. Wednesday, the Census Bureau will report new orders for manufactured durable goods for March. Thursday, the Department of Labor will issue its initial jobless claims report, Freddie Mac will update average mortgage rates for the week and the National Association of Realtors will report existing home sales for March.

Friday, the Dow gained 22.34 points (0.07%) to close at 33,808.96, the Nasdaq gained 12.90 points (0.11%) to close at 12,072.46 and the S&P 500 gained 3.73 points (0.09%) to close at 4,133.52. The Russell 2000 gained 1.81 points (0.10%) to close at 1,791.51 and the Wilshire 5000 increased 37.03 points (0.09%) to close at 40,845.91.
The 10-year Treasury note rose 1/32, bringing the yield to 3.577%. The 30-year Treasury bond rose 1/32, bringing the yield to 3.782%.
For the week ending April 21, the Dow fell 0.23%, the Nasdaq decreased 0.42% and the S&P 500 decreased 0.10%. The Russell 2000 gained 0.58% and the Wilshire 5000 finished 0.06% lower.

ON THIS DATE: In 1800, the Library of Congress was officially founded as President John Adams approved the $5,000 appropriated to acquire “such books as may be necessary for the use of Congress”. In 1898, Spain declared war on the United States. In 1916, members of the Irish Volunteers and the Irish Citizen Army seized strategic points in Dublin during the Easter Rising, which heralded the end of British power in Ireland. In 1967, Soviet cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov became the first man to die during a space mission when his spacecraft became entangled in its parachute during an attempted landing. In 1980, U.S. forces launched a mission to rescue American hostages in Iran, but the attempt failed, and eight U.S. service members were killed. In 2004, businesswoman Estée Lauder, who cofounded the eponymous fragrance and beauty company, died in Manhattan. In 2005, Pope Benedict XVI (Joseph Ratzinger), successor to John Paul II, formally assumed his position as the new leader of the Roman Catholic Church. In 2015, the Nasdaq Composite closed at a record high of 5092.09.
