Monday, the Dow gained 66.44 points (0.20%) to close at 33,875.40, the Nasdaq lost 35.25 points (0.29%) to close at 12,037.20 and the S&P 500 gained 3.52 points (0.09%) to close at 4,137.04. The Russell 2000 lost 2.63 points (0.15%) to close at 1,788.87 and the Wilshire 5000 gained 9.67 points (0.02%) to close at 40,855.57.
The 10-year Treasury note fell 2/32, bringing the yield to 3.496%. The 30-year Treasury bond fell 2/32, bringing the 3.711%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1859, construction of the Suez Canal officially began; completed 10 years later, the waterway connected the Mediterranean and Red seas. In 1901 New York became the first U.S. state to mandate license plates. In 1950, the Boston Celtics selected Chuck Cooper, an All-American forward from Duquesne University, as the first African American picked in the National Basketball Association draft. In 1959, the St. Lawrence Seaway officially opened, linking the Atlantic Ocean with the Great Lakes. In 1990, the Hubble Space Telescope, a sophisticated optical observatory built in the United States under the supervision of NASA, was placed into operation by the crew of the space shuttle Discovery. In 2014, the water supply of Flint, Michigan, was switched from the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department to the Flint River, causing a public health crisis as residents were exposed to dangerously high levels of lead. In 2015, a magnitude 7.8-earthquake struck near Kathmandu, Nepal, causing widespread damage and killing several thousand.
