Interest on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 2.98% for the week ending April 29, up slightly from last week when it averaged 2.97%, according to Freddie Mac. A year ago at this time, the 30-year FRM averaged 3.23%. Interest on a 15-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 2.31%, up from last week when it averaged 2.29%. A year ago at this time, the 15-year FRM averaged 2.77%.

In the week ending April 24, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims for unemployment insurance was 553,000, a decrease of 13,000 from the previous week’s revised level of 566,000, the Labor Department reported. The four-week moving average was 611,750, a decrease of 44,000 from the previous week’s revised average of 655,750. This is the lowest level for this average since March 14, 2020, when it was 225,500.

Thursday, the Dow climbed 239.98 points (0.71%) to 34,060.36, the Nasdaq increased 31.52 points (0.22%) to 14,082.55, and the S&P 500 gained 28.29 points (0.68%) to finish at 4,211.47. The Russell 2000 was down 8.70 points (0.38%) at 2,295.46, and the Wilshire 5000 closed 193.29 points (0.44%) higher at 44,220.96.

The price of the 10-year Treasury note was down 2/32, increasing its yield to 1.642%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond decreased 24/32, bringing its yield up to 2.301%.

In Daytona Beach, Florida, a woman suffered injuries when she was riding in a car with her daughter and something crashed through the windshield. It was not one of the usual items that hit windshields, such as a rock or debris—it was a turtle! According to the Associated Press, the turtle was likely crossing the interstate and got knocked into the air by another vehicle. The woman was not seriously hurt.
