Monday, the Dow rose 146.43 points (0.38%) to close at 38,386.09 , the Nasdaq rose 55.18 points (0.35%) to close at 15,983.08 and the S&P 500 rose 16.21 points (0.32%) to close at 5,116.17. The Russell 2000 rose 14.03 points (0.70%) to close at 2,016.03, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 174.31 points (0.34%) to close at 51,412.41.

The 10-year Treasury note fell 2/32, bringing the yield to 4.618%. The 30-year Treasury bond fell 2/32, bringing the yield to 4.733%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1789, George Washington, the first president of the U.S., was inaugurated in Federal Hall in New York City. In 1897, English physicist J.J. Thomson announced that he had discovered the electron, which helped revolutionize the knowledge of atomic structure; he later was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics. In 1900, President William McKinley signed the Hawaiian Organic Act, which made Hawaii a territory of the U.S. In 1926, aviator Bessie Coleman, the first American woman and first Black person to obtain an international pilot’s license from the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale, died after her plane crashed during rehearsal for an aerial show. In 1933, the birth of country singer and songwriter Willie Nelson was recorded, as he was actually born on April 29 in Abbott, Texas. In 1939, the National Broadcasting Company made the first public television broadcast in the U.S., at the New York World’s Fair. In 1945, German dictator Adolf Hitler and his wife, Eva Braun, committed suicide in a bunker in Berlin. In 1975, the South Vietnamese capital of Saigon fell to North Vietnamese troops during the Vietnam War and was renamed as Ho Chi Minh City. In 1989, Italian director Sergio Leone—who popularized the “spaghetti western” with his hugely successful Dollar trilogy, which included the film “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly”—died at age 60. In 2013, Willem-Alexander became king of the Netherlands after his mother, Queen Beatrix, abdicated; she had ascended the throne 33 years earlier.
