Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 303,000 in March, and the unemployment rate dropped to 3.8%, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. Job gains occurred in health care, government and construction.

Wednesday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics will report the consumer price index for March. Thursday, the Department of Labor will issue its weekly initial jobless claims report, Freddie Mac will update average mortgage rates for the week and the Bureau of Labor Statistics will report the producer price index for March.  
MARKET MIRROR
Friday, the Dow rose 307.06 points (0.80%) to close at 38,904.04, the Nasdaq rose 199.44 points (1.24%) to close at 16,248.52 and the S&P 500 rose 57.13 points (1.11%) to close at 5,204.34. The Russell 2000 rose 9.64 points (0.47%) to close at 2,063.47, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 556.89 points (1.08%) to close at 52,338.15.

The 10-year Treasury note fell 29/32, bringing the yield to 4.405%. The 30-year Treasury bond fell 1 3/32, bringing the yield to 4.556%.

For the week ending April 5, the Dow fell 2.27 %, the Nasdaq fell 0.80% and the S&P 500 fell 0.95%. The Russell 2000 fell 2.87%, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index ended 1.09% lower.

ON THIS DATE: In 1912, Sonja Henie, a Norwegian American figure skater who won the world amateur championship for women in 10 consecutive years from 1927 to 1936 and three gold medals in the Winter Olympic Games in 1928, 1932 and 1936 was born. In 1913, the 17th Amendment, which called for the direct election of U.S. senators by voters of the states, was ratified. In 1920, Venus de Milo, an ancient statue commonly thought to represent Aphrodite, was found in pieces on the Aegean island of Melos; it was later reconstructed and put on display in the Louvre, Paris. In 1941, British fashion designer Vivienne Westwood—who, with her partner, Malcolm McLaren, extended the influence of the 1970s punk music movement into fashion—was born.
