Monday, the Dow fell 349.26 points (0.91%) to close at 37,965.60, the Nasdaq rose 15.48 points (0.10%) to close at 15,603.26 and the S&P 500 fell 11.83 points (0.23%) to close at 5,062.25. The Russell 2000 fell 16.89 points (0.92%) to close at 1,810.14, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index fell 150.55 points (0.30%) to close at 50,408.41.

The 10-year Treasury note rose 23/32, bringing the yield to 3.992%. The 30-year Treasury bond fell 26/32, bringing the yield to 4.445%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1913, the Seventeenth Amendment, which called for the direct election of U.S. senators by voters of the states, was ratified. In 1950, Jawaharlal Nehru of India concluded the Delhi Pact with Liaqat Ali Khan of Pakistan, providing for the safe passage of refugees displaced after the two countries severed relations in December 1949. In 1973, Pablo Picasso, one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, died in France at age 91. In 1974, American baseball player Hank Aaron hit his 715th career home run, breaking Babe Ruth’s record. In 1976 he completed his career with 755 home runs. In 1990, Ryan White, who became a national symbol in the U.S. after he contracted AIDS from a blood transfusion given to treat his hemophilia, died at age 18. In 2013, Margaret Thatcher, who was the United Kingdom’s (and Europe’s) first woman prime minister (1979–90) and the only British prime minister in the 20th century to win three consecutive terms, died at age 87.
