Monday, the Dow fell 11.24 points (0.03%) to close at 38,892.80, the Nasdaq rose 5.44 points (0.03%) to close at 16,253.96 and the S&P 500 fell 1.95 points (0.04%) to close at 5,202.39. The Russell 2000 rose 10.24 points (0.50%) to close at 2,073.71, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 15.75 points (0.03%) to close at 52,353.91.
The 10-year Treasury note rose 1/32, bringing the yield to 4.430%. The 30-year Treasury bond was unchanged, bringing the yield to 4.550%

ON THIS DATE: In 1682, French explorer René-Robert Cavelier claimed the Mississippi River basin for France, naming it Louisiana. In 1865, General Robert E. Lee, commander of the Army of Northern Virginia of the Confederate States of America, signed a treaty of surrender at Appomattox Court House, effectively ending the U.S. Civil War. In 1898, entertainer and political activist Paul Robeson was born. In 1939, African American contralto Marian Anderson sang to an Easter Sunday crowd of 75,000 at the Lincoln Memorial after the Daughters of the American Revolution refused to allow her to sing at Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C. In 1963, an act of Congress conferred honorary U.S. citizenship on Sir Winston Churchill. In 1965, the Astrodome opened in Houston, Texas, hosting the first indoor baseball game. In 2001, American Airlines officially completed its acquisition of Trans World Airlines and became the world’s largest airline. In 2003, Baghdad fell to U.S.-led forces, several weeks after the start of the Iraq War, a conflict begun to oust Iraqi President Saddam Hussein because of his supposed possession of weapons of mass destruction. In 2008, King Charles III, -then-prince of Wales, married Camilla Parker Bowles.
