Yesterday, the Dow climbed 357.96 points (1.30%) to 27,791.44, the NASDAQ closed 42.63 points (0.39%) lower at 10,968.36, and the S&P 500 increased 9.19 points (0.27%) to 3,360.47. The Russell 2000 gained 15.49 points (0.99%) to finish at 1,584.67, and the Wilshire 5000 was up 86.74 points (0.25%) at 34,354.09.
The price of the 10-year Treasury note was down 1/32, increasing its yield to 0.581%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond decreased 27/32, bringing its yield up to 1.254%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1877, the two moons of Mars were discovered by Asaph Hall, an American astronomer. He named them Phobos and Deimos. In 1934, a group of federal prisoners classified as “most dangerous” arrived at Alcatraz Island, a 22-acre rocky outcrop situated 1.5 miles offshore in San Francisco Bay. In 1972, the last U.S. ground combat unit in South Vietnam, the Third Battalion, Twenty-First Infantry, departed for the United States. In 1984, the Cincinnati Reds honored major league All-Star and Hall of Fame catcher Johnny Bench by retiring his uniform (#5). In 1992, in Bloomington, Minnesota, the Mall of America opened. It was the largest shopping mall in the United States. In 2014, Robin Williams, Oscar-winning actor and comedian, died at the age of 63.
