Monday, the Dow rose 26.23 points (0.07%) to close at 35,307.63 the Nasdaq rose 143.48 points (1.05%) to close at 13,788.33 and the S&P 500 rose 25.67 points (0.58%) to close at 4,489.72. The Russell 2000 fell 4.62 points (0.24%) to close at 1,920.49 and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 224.21 points (0.50%) to close at 45,313.98.

The price of the 10-year Treasury note fell 3/32, bringing the yield to 4.195%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond fell 5/32, bringing the yield to 4.290%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1914, following 10 years of work, the Panama Canal opened to ships. In 1947, after three decades, the Indian independence movement, led by Mahatma Gandhi, achieved its goal of a free and independent India, ending nearly 200 years of British rule. In 1948, Syngman Rhee, the first president of South Korea, announced the establishment of the Republic of Korea. In 1960, the Republic of the Congo gained independence from France. In 1961, two days after sealing off free passage between East and West Berlin with barbed wire, East German authorities begin building a wall to permanently close off access to the West. For the next 28 years, the heavily fortified Berlin Wall stood as a symbol of the Cold War—a literal “iron curtain” dividing Europe. In 2021, the Taliban regained control of Kabul, Afghanistan, as U.S. troops withdrew from the country.
