Thursday, the Department of Labor will issue its initial jobless claims report, and Freddie Mac will update average mortgage rates for the week. 
MARKET MIRROR
Friday the Dow rose 846.24 points (1.89%) to close at 45,631.74, the Nasdaq rose 396.22 points (1.88%) to close at 21,496.53 and the S&P 500 rose 96.74 points (1.52%) to close at 6,466.91. The Russell 2000 rose 87.85 points (3.86%) to close at 2,361.95 and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 1,083.84 points (1.70%) to close at 64,699.20 points.

The 10-year Treasury note rose 6/32, bringing the yield to 4.259%. The 30-year Treasury bond rose 6/32, bringing the yield to 4.879%.   

In the week ending August 22, the Dow rose 1.53%, the Nasdaq was down 0.58% and the S&P 500 increased 0.26%. The Russell 2000 was up 3.30%, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index finished 0.53% higher.

ON THIS DATE: In 1916, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson signed the “Organic Act,” which established the National Park Service. In 1944, some two months after the Allied invasion of Normandy, Paris was liberated from German occupiers as the Free French 2nd Armoured Division under General Jacques-Philippe Leclerc entered the city. In 1945, John Birch, an American Baptist missionary and U.S. Army intelligence officer, was killed by Chinese communists, which later inspired the founding of the John Birch Society – a private organization that considered Birch to be the first hero of the Cold War. In 2009, politician Ted Kennedy, who was a prominent figure in the Democratic Party and the last surviving brother of President John F. Kennedy, died at age 77. In 2012, U.S. astronaut Neil Armstrong – who was the first person to set foot on the Moon – died at age 82. In 2018, politician John McCain – who served two terms in the U.S. House of Representatives and 31 years as a U.S., senator, lost to Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential election– died at age 81.
