On Tuesday, the Conference Board will report the Consumer Confidence Index for August. On Thursday, the Department of Labor will release its initial jobless claims report and Freddie Mac will update average mortgage rates for the week.

Friday, the Dow rose 462.30 points (1.14%) to close at 41,175.08, the Nasdaq rose 258.44 points (1.47%) to close at 17,877.79 and the S&P 500 rose 63.97 points (1.15%) to close at 5,634.61. The Russell 2000 rose 68.67 points (3.19%) to close at 2,218.70, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 733.71 points (1.32%) to close at 56,430.30.
The 10-year Treasury note increased 4/32, bringing the yield to 3.804%. The 30-year Treasury bond increased 6/32, bringing the yield to 4.093%.
In the week ending August 23, the Dow rose 1.27%, the Nasdaq climbed 1.40% and the S&P 500 rose 1.45%. The Russell 2000 rose 3.58%, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index finished 1.64% higher.

ON THIS DATE: In 1821, the Treaty of Cordoba was signed, giving Mexico its independence from Spain. In 1932, aviator Amelia Earhart took off from Los Angeles, and, when she landed in Newark, New Jersey, the following day, she became the first woman to complete a solo nonstop flight across the U.S. In 1949, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization entered into force, following the signing of its treaty four months earlier. In 1989, former Major League Baseball player and manager Pete Rose was banned from the sport after an investigation determined that he had bet on games, and he thereby became ineligible for the Baseball Hall of Fame; he later admitted to gambling on baseball. In 2006, Pluto was demoted from planet to dwarf planet after the International Astronomical Union approved a reclassification of the solar system. In 2011, amid health issues, Steve Jobs resigned as CEO of Apple, and he died less than two months later. In 2021, English drummer Charlie Watts, an integral member of the rock bank the Rolling Stones, died at age 80.
