Interest on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage (FRM) averaged 2.87% for the week ending August 26, up slightly from last week when it averaged 2.86%, according to Freddie Mac. A year ago at this time, the 30-year FRM averaged 2.91%. Interest on a 15-year FRM averaged 2.17%, up slightly last week when it averaged 2.16%. A year ago at this time, the 15-year FRM averaged 2.46%.

In the week ending August 21, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims for unemployment insurance was 353,000, an increase of 4,000 from the previous week’s revised level of 349,000, the Labor Department reported. The four-week moving average was 366,500, a decrease of 11,500 from the previous week’s revised average of 378,000. This is the lowest level for this average since March 14, 2020, when it was 225,500.

Thursday, the Dow was down 192.38 points (0.54%) at 35,213.12, the Nasdaq closed 96.05 points (0.64%) lower at 14,945.81, and the S&P 500 decreased 26.19 points (0.58%) to 4,470.00. The price of the 10-year Treasury note was unchanged, with its yield up to 1.352%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond increased 24/32, bringing its yield down to 1.948%.
