Monday, the Dow rose 65.44 points (0.16%) to close at 41,240.52, the Nasdaq fell 152.03 points (0.85%) to close at 17,725.77 and the S&P 500 fell 17.77 points (0.32%) to close at 5,616.84. The Russell 2000 fell 0.78 points (0.04%) to close at 2,217.92.  The FT Wilshire 5000 fell 169.19 points (0.30%) to close at 56,261.11.

The 10-year Treasury note decreased 1/32, bringing the yield to 3.818%. The 30-year Treasury bond decreased 3/32, bringing the yield to 4.108%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1908, politician Lyndon B. Johnson, who served as the 36th president of the U.S., was born. In 1939, German Ernst Heinrich Heinkel’s He 178, a turbojet-powered aircraft, made the first jet flight. In 1964, the musical film “Mary Poppins,” an adaptation of P.L. Travers’ book, had its world premiere in Los Angeles. In 2008, Democratic politician Barack Obama became the first African American to be nominated for the presidency by either major party; he later defeated Republic John McCain to win the office. In 2011, after causing extensive damage to various Caribbean islands, Hurricane Irene made landfall in the U.S., striking North Carolina’s Outer Banks before moving along the Eastern Seaboard; property damage in the U.S. exceeded $7 billion, making Irene one of the most expensive Atlantic hurricanes in the country’s history.
