The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index rose in August to 103.3, from an upwardly revised 101.9 in July. The Present Situation Index—based on consumers’ assessment of current business and labor market conditions—improved to 134.4 from 133.1 in July. The Expectations Index—based on consumers’ short-term outlook for income, business, and labor market conditions—also improved in August to 82.5. As the Expectations Index for July was revised up to 81.1, August marked the second consecutive month of the index above 80. (A reading below the threshold of 80 usually signals a recession ahead.)

Tuesday, the Dow rose 9.98 points (0.02%) to close at 41,250.50, the Nasdaq rose 29.06 points (0.16%) to close at 17,754.82 and the S&P 500 rose 8.96 points (0.16%) to close at 5,625.80. The Russell 2000 fell 14.93 points (0.67%) to close at 2,203.00, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 49.30 points (0.09%) to close at 56,310.41.
The 10-year Treasury note decreased 1/32, bringing the yield to 3.828%. The 30-year Treasury bond decreased 2/32, bringing the yield to 4.117%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1914, the first major engagement of the British and German navies during World War I occurred at the Battle of Helgoland Bight. In 1963, some 200,000 people marched on Washington, D.C. an event that became a high point of the civil rights movement, especially remembered for the famous “I Have a Dream” speech by Martin Luther King, Jr. In 1968, protests at the 1968 Democratic National Convention—fueled, in part, by opposition to the Vietnam War—culminated in the so-called Battle of Michigan Avenue, a violent confrontation between demonstrators and police. In 1993, the spacecraft Galileo took pictures of the asteroid Ida. In 1996, the 15-year marriage of Charles, prince of Wales, and Diana, princess of Wales, ended as a final divorce decree was issued. In 2014, American spy John Walker, a U.S. Navy communications specialist who passed classified documents to Soviet agents for nearly two decades before being caught, died in prison at age 77. In 2020, actor Chadwick Boseman, who had iconic roles in such movies as “Black Panther,” died from colon cancer age 43.
