The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index increased in June to 109.7, up from 102.5 in May. The Present Situation Index—based on consumers’ assessment of current business and labor market conditions—rose to 155.3 from 148.9 last month. The Expectations Index—based on consumers’ short-term outlook for income, business, and labor market conditions—rose to 79.3 from 71.5 in May. Expectations have remained below 80—the level associated with a recession within the next year—every month since February 2022, with the exception of a brief uptick in December 2022. However, June’s reading was just a shade below 80 and up sharply from last month’s print.

Tuesday, the Dow rose 292.69 points (0.85%) to close at 34,852.67, the Nasdaq rose 238.63 points (1.74%) to close at 13,943.76 and the S&P 500 rose 64.32 points (1.45%) to close at 4,497.63. The Russell 2000 gained 26.53 points (1.42%) to close at 1,895.54 and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index gained 657.86 points (1.47%) to close at 45,335.94.
The 10-year Treasury note increased 6/32, bringing the yield to 4.125%. The 30-year Treasury bond increased 30/32, bringing the yield to 4.232%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1797, British author Marry Wollstonecraft Shelley, known most for writing novels Frankenstein and Mathilda, was born. In 1918, Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin was shot twice in an unsuccessful assassination attempt. In 1983, astronaut Guion S. Bluford, Jr. became the first African American to travel into space, serving as a mission specialist aboard the shuttle orbiter Challenger, and later flew on three other missions. In 1993, Late Show with David Letterman – which offered an innovative and frequently off-the-wall approach to the talk show format – debuted on CBS. In 2003, actor Charles Bronson – who was best known for his portrayal of tough guys, notable an architect turned vigilante in Death Wish – died in Los Angeles at age 81. In 2015, British neurologist and writer Oliver Sacks, who won acclaim for his sympathetic case histories of patients with unusual neurological disorders, died in New York, New York, at age 82. In 2021, following a chaotic withdrawal, the last U.S. troops left Afghanistan, some seven years after the war in that country had officially ended.
