The Russell 2000 rose 13.37 points (0.60%) to close at 2,225.67 and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index fell 277.09 points (0.44%) to close at 62,910.95.

The 10-year Treasury note fell 1/32, bringing the yield to 4.207%. The 30-year Treasury bond rose 3/32, bringing the yield to 4.776%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1940, Estonia lost its independence when the Soviet Union annexed the country. In 1945, the U.S. dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan—the blast killed more than 70,000 people and destroyed most of the city—in an effort to hasten the end of World War II. In 1962, after 300 years of British rule, Jamaica became an independent country within the Commonwealth of Nations. In 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act, which sought to overcome legal barriers at the state and local levels that prevented African Americans from exercising their right to vote; the legislation has been weakened through several lawsuits in the 21st century. In 1990, the U.N. Security Council imposed economic sanctions on Iraq, ruled by Saddam Hussein, for its invasion of Kuwait four days earlier. In 2012, NASA’s robotic vehicle Curiosity (also called Mars Science Laboratory) landed on Mars and soon began transmitting images of the planet’s surface. In 2015, comedian Jon Stewart hosted his last episode of “The Daily Show,” a satiric news program that became a leading forum for current events.
