Monday, the Dow fell 240.59 points (0.54%) to close at 44,401.93, the Nasdaq fell 123.08 points (0.62%) to close at 19,736.69 and the S&P 500 fell 37.42 points (0.61%) to close at 6,052.85. The Russell 2000 fell 16.16 points (0.67%) to close at 2,392.84, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index fell 421.79 points (0.69%) to close at 61,001.54.
The 10-year Treasury note decreased 3/32, bringing the yield to 4.203%. The 30-year Treasury bond decreased 30/32, bringing the yield to 4.389%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1768, the first part of the first edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica, the oldest continuously published and revised work in the English language, was published and advertised for sale in Edinburgh. In 1948, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In 1967, singer-songwriter Otis Redding, who was one of the great soul stylists of the 1960s, died in an airplane crash. In 1982, a treaty codifying the Law of the Sea was signed by 117 countries. In 1996, South African President Nelson Mandela signed a new constitution that completed a transition from a long period of white minority rule (apartheid) to full-fledged democracy. In 2005, comedian and actor Richard Pryor died at age 65. In 2006, Chilean General August Pinochet, whose dictatorial reign in Chile was marked by the murder and torture of political opponents, died while facing charges of human rights abuses. In 2007, Argentine politician Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner was sworn into office as Argentina’s first woman elected president; she succeeded her husband, Nestor Kirchner.
