Monday, the Dow rose 157.06 points (0.43%) to close at 36,404.93, the Nasdaq rose 28.51 points (0.20%) to close at 14,432.49 and the S&P 500 rose 18.07 points (0.39%) to close at 4,622.44. The Russell 2000 gained 2.86 points (0.15%) to close at 1,883.68, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index gained 180.00 points (0.39%) to close at 46,601.70.
The 10-year Treasury note decreased 1/32, bringing the yield to 4.239%. The 30-year Treasury bond decreased 4/32, bringing the yield to 4.331%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1915, singer Frank Sinatra, who also achieved wide success as a film actor, was born in Hoboken, New Jersey. In 1923, game show host Bob Barker, best known for hosting “The Price is Right,” was born. In 1936, Chinese Nationalist leader Chiang Kai-shek was seized by one of his own generals, Chang Hsueh-liang, beginning the Xi’an Incident. In 1964, Kenya became a republic on the first anniversary of its independence from Great Britain. In 1977, the music drama “Saturday Night Fever,” starring John Travolta, had its world premiere; the film was a huge hit, as was the accompanying disco soundtrack by the Bee Gees. In 1999, author Joseph Heller—author of “Catch-22,” one of the most significant works of protest literature to appear after World War II—died at age 76. In 2000, the U.S. Supreme Court effectively awarded the presidency to George W. Bush, ruling that a fair recount of ballots in Florida could not be performed by the deadline for certifying the state’s electors. In 2009, with the victory of the Democratic politician Annise Parker, Houston became the largest city in the U.S. at the time to elect an openly gay mayor. In 2015, a landmark climate change agreement was reached at a UN conference in Paris, as 195 countries agreed to limit greenhouse gas emissions; the accord effectively replaced the Kyoto Protocol. In 2020, English writer John le Carré, best known for suspenseful, realistic spy novels, died at age 89.
