Wednesday, the Dow fell 99.27 points (0.22%) to close at 44,148.56, the Nasdaq rose 347.65 points (1.77%) to close at 20,034.89 and the S&P 500 rose 49.28 points (0.82%) to close at 6,084.19. The Russell 2000 rose 11.38 points (0.48%) to close at 2,394.16, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 500.54 points (0.82%) to close at 61,274.70. 

The 10-year Treasury note decreased 26/32, bringing the yield to 4.275%. The 30-year Treasury bond decreased 1 2/32, bringing the yield to 4.484%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1915, singer Frank Sinatra, who also achieved wide success as a film actor, was born in Hoboken, New Jersey. In 1923, game show host Bob Barker, who was best known for hosting “The Price is Right,” was born. In 1936, Chinese Nationalist leader Chiang Kai-shek was seized by one of his own generals, Chang Hsueh-liang, beginning the Xi’an Incident. In 1964, Kenya became a republic on the first anniversary of its independence from Great Britain. In 1977, the music drama “Saturday Night Fever,” starring John Travolta, had its world premiere. In 2000, the U.S. Supreme Court effectively awarded the presidency to George W. Bush, ruling that a fair recount of ballots in Florida could not be performed by the deadline for certifying the state’s electors. In 2009, with the victory of the Democratic politician Annise Parker, Houston became the then largest city in the U.S. to elect an openly gay mayor. In 2015, a landmark climate change agreement was reached at a UN conference in Paris as 195 countries agreed to limit greenhouse gas emissions; the accord effectively replaced the Kyoto Protocol. In 2020, English writer John le Carré, who was best known for suspenseful, realistic spy novels, died at age 89.
