In November, the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers increased 0.1%, seasonally adjusted, and rose 3.1% over the last 12 months, not seasonally adjusted, the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced. The index for all items less food and energy increased 0.3% in November; up 4.0% over the year.

Tuesday, the Dow rose 173.01 points (0.48%) to close at 36,577.94, the Nasdaq rose 100.91 points (0.70%) to close at 14,533.40 and the S&P 500 rose 21.26 points (0.46%) to close at 4,643.70. The Russell 2000 fell 2.41 points (0.13%) to close at 1,881.27, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 186.95 points (0.40%) to close at 46,788.64.
The 10-year Treasury note increased 3/32, bringing the yield to 4.204%. The 30-year Treasury bond increased 3/32, bringing the yield to 4.311%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1642, Dutch navigator Abel Tasman sighted South Island, New Zealand, and later, mistaking the strait north of the island for a bay, believed he had found the west coast of a hypothetical southern continent. In 1913, boxer Archie Moore, the world light heavyweight boxing champion from 1952 until 1962, was born. In 1921, the Four-Power Pact was signed during the Washington Conference by the U.S., Great Britain, Japan and France, stipulating that all the signatories would be consulted in the event of a controversy between two of them over “any Pacific question.” In 1934, British astronomer J.P.M. Prentice discovered Nova Herculis, one of the brightest novas of the 20th century. In 1937, the Japanese Imperial Army seized Nanjing, China, during the Sino-Japanese War, leading to the Nanjing Massacre, in which up to 300,000 Chinese may have been killed. In 1959, the film drama “Anastasia” was released in American theaters; it marked the Hollywood comeback of Ingrid Bergman, whose extramarital affair had caused a scandal, and she won an Academy Award for her performance. In 1989, singer, songwriter, record producer, director, businesswoman and cultural icon Taylor Swift was born in West Reading, Pennsylvania. In 2003, Iraqi President Saddam Hussein was captured by U.S. forces during the Iraq War; three years later he was found guilty of crimes against humanity and was executed.
