Monday, the Dow fell 110.58 points (0.25%) to close at 43,717.48, the Nasdaq rose 247.17 points (1.24%) to close at 20,173.89 and the S&P 500 rose 22.99 points (0.38%) to close at 6,074.08. The Russell 2000 rose 15.10 points (0.64%) to close at 2,361.99, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 245.36 points (0.40%) to close at 61,122.85.

The 10-year Treasury note was unchanged, bringing the yield to 4.402%. The 30-year Treasury bond was unchanged, bringing the yield to 4.599%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1892, the first issue of “Vogue” was published; initially a weekly high-society journal, it became a hugely influential American fashion and lifestyle magazine. In 1903, near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright made the first successful sustained flights in an airplane—Orville first, gliding 120 feet through the air in 12 seconds. In 1989, after appearing as a cartoon short, the animated television series “The Simpsons” debuted as a Christmas special; it became a weekly series in 1990. In 1992, the North American Free Trade Agreement was signed by the leaders of Mexico, Canada and the U.S.; it was replaced by the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement in 2020. In 2010, Tunisian street vendor Mohamed Bouazizi set himself on fire after being harassed by municipal officials, giving rise to Tunisia’s Jasmine Revolution and helping inspire the Arab Spring; he died from his injuries the following month. In 2011, North Korean ruler Kim Jong Il died; he was succeeded by his youngest son, Kim Jong-Un. In 2014, the U.S. and Cuba participated in an exchange of imprisoned spies; a first step toward reestablishing diplomatic relations in 2015 after they had been suspended for more than 50 years.
