In the week ending November 26, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims for unemployment insurance was 225,000, a decrease of 16,000 from the previous week’s revised level, the Department of Labor reported. The previous week’s level was revised up by 1,000 from 240,000 to 241,000. The four-week moving average was 228,750, an increase of 1,750 from the previous week’s revised average. The previous week’s average was revised up by 250 from 226,750 to 227,000.

Interest on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 6.49%, down from last week, when it averaged 6.58%, according to Freddie Mac. A year ago at this time, the 30-year FRM averaged 3.11%. Interest on a 15-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 5.76%, down from last week, when it averaged 5.90%. A year ago at this time, the 15-year FRM averaged 2.39%.

Construction spending during October was estimated at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $1,794.9 billion, 0.3% below the revised September estimate of $1,800.1 billion, the Census Bureau reported. The October figure is 9.2% above the October 2021 estimate of $1,644.3 billion. During the first 10 months of this year, construction spending amounted to $1,507.8 billion, 10.8% above the $1,360.8 billion for the same period in 2021.

Thursday, the Dow decreased 194.76 points (0.56%) to close at 34,395.01, the Nasdaq gained 14.45 points (0.13%) to end trading at 11,482.45 and the S&P 500 decreased 3.54 points (0.09%) to close at 4,076.57. The Russell 2000 decreased 4.89 points (0.26%) to close at 1,881.68 and the Wilshire 5000 decreased 16.11 points (0.04%) to close at 40,536.31.

The price of the 10-year Treasury note decreased 6/32, and the yield was down to 3.511%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond decreased 7/32, and the yield was down to 3.602%.
