Privately-owned housing starts in November 2023 were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,560,000, the Census Bureau reported. This is 14.8% above the revised October 2023 estimate of 1,359,000.

Tuesday, the Dow rose 251.90 points (0.68%) to close at 37,557.92, the Nasdaq rose 98.03 points (0.66%) to close at 15,003.22 and the S&P 500 rose 27.81 points (0.59%) to close at 4,768.37. The Russell 2000 rose 38.54 points (1.94%) to close at 2,020.95, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 343.8 points (0.72%) to close at 48,276.22.
The 10-year Treasury note rose 1/32, bringing the yield to 3.932%. The 30-year Treasury bond rose 1/32, bringing the yield to 4.043%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1860, following Abraham Lincoln’s election as U.S. president, South Carolina became the first U.S. state to secede from the Union. In 1946, director Frank Capra’s movie “It’s a Wonderful Life,” a drama starring Jimmy Stewart, premiered. In 1960, the Vietnamese National Liberation Front was formed, with the purpose of effecting the reunification of North and South Vietnam. In 1971, Pakistani President Agha Mohammad Yahya Khan transferred power to Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. In 1974, Ethiopia was declared a socialist state under the leadership of Mengistu Haile Mariam. In 1989, the U.S. launched Operation Just Cause, a military invasion of Panama, the initial attack focusing primarily on the Panama City headquarters of leader Manuel Noriega. In 1999, 12 years after an agreement was reached between China and Portugal, several centuries of Portuguese rule ended in Macau when it became a special administrative region under Chinese sovereignty. In 2008, director Robert Mulligan, whose credits most notably include the film “To Kill a Mockingbird,” died at age 83. In 2019, President Donald Trump signed the National Defense Authorization Act, which established the Space Force, a new branch of the U.S. military.
