Friday, the Dow fell 18.38 points (0.05%) to close at 37,385.97, the Nasdaq rose 29.11 points (0.19%) to close at 14,992.97 and the S&P 500 rose 7.88 points (0.17%) to close at 4,754.63. The Russell 2000 rose 16.90 points (0.84%) to close at 2,033.96, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 107.98 points (0.22%) to close at 48,171.76.

The 10-year Treasury note fell 1/32, bringing the yield to 3.897%. The 30-year Treasury bond fell 4/32, bringing the yield to 4.052%.

For the week ending December 22, the Dow rose 0.22%, the Nasdaq rose 1.21% and the S&P 500 rose 0.75%. The Russell 2000 rose 2.46%, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index finished 0.90% higher.

ON THIS DATE: In 1893, Mao Zedong, chairman of the People’s Republic of China, was born. In 1908, boxer Jack Johnson defeated Tommy Burns in Sydney to become the first black fighter to win the world heavyweight championship. In 1963, the Beatles’ single “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” with “I Saw Her Standing There on the B-side was first released in the U.S.; hugely successful, it helped launch Beatlemania. In 1966, celebrations for the first Kwanzaa began in the U.S., and the holiday continued until January 1; the annual event, which affirms African family and social values, was created by Maulana Karenga. In 1973, the horror film “The Exorcist,” an adaptation of William Peter Blatty’s book about a young girl possessed by the Devil, was released in the U.S. The recipient of 10 Oscar nominations, including for director William Friedkin, it became one of the highest-grossing films of all time. In 1985, the slain body of American zoologist Dian Fossey—the world’s leading authority on the mountain gorilla—was found in Rwanda; it was widely suspected that she was killed by poachers. In 2004, a large earthquake shook the Indian Ocean floor west of the island of Sumatra, triggering a devastating tsunami that swamped coastal areas from Thailand to Africa and killed more than 200,000 people. In 2006, Gerald R. Ford—who was the 38th president of the U.S. and the country’s only chief executive who was not elected as either president or vice president—died in California.
