Tuesday, the Dow rose 390.08 points (0.91%) to close at 43,297.03, the Nasdaq rose 266.24 points (1.35%) to close at 20,031.13 and the S&P 500 rose 65.97 points (1.10%) to close at 6,040.04. The Russell 2000 rose 22.42 points (1.00%) to close at 2,259.85, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 651.82 points (1.09%) to close at 60,506.99.

The 10-year Treasury note was unchanged, bringing the yield to 4.595%. The 30-year Treasury bond increased 1/32, bringing the yield to 4.769%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1893, Mao Zedong, chairman of the People’s Republic of China, was born. In 1943, the German battle cruiser “Schanhorst” was sunk by the British battleship “Duke of York” during World War II. In 1963, The Beatles’ single “I want to Hold Your Hand,” with “I Saw Her Standing There” on the B-side, was first released in the U.S. In 1985, the slain body of zoologist Dian Fossey—the world’s leading authority on the mountain gorilla—was found in Rwanda; it was widely suspected that she was killed by poachers. In 2004, a large earthquake shook the Indian Ocean floor west of the island of Sumatra, triggering a devastating tsunami that swamped coastal areas from Thailand to Africa and killed more than 200,000 people. In 2006, politician Gerald R. Ford—the 38th president of the U.S. and the country’s only chief executive who was not elected as either president or vice president—died in California. In 2021, E.O. Wilson, a biologist and Pulitzer Prize-winning writer known for being the world’s authority on ants, died in Massachusetts.
