The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index increased in December to 110.7, from a downwardly revises 101.0 in November. The Present Situation Index—based on consumers’ assessment of current business and labor market conditions—rose to 148.5 from 136.5 last month. The Expectations Index—based on consumers’ short-term outlook for income, business and labor market conditions—leapt to 85.6 in December, up from its downwardly revised reading of 77.4 in November. This sharp increase brings expectations back to the levels of optimism last seen in July of this year.

Tuesday, the Dow rose 159.36 points (0.43%) to close at 37,545.33, the Nasdaq rose 81.60 points (0.54%) to close at 15,074.57 and the S&P 500 rose 20.12 points (0.42%) to close at 4,774.75. The Russell 2000 gained 25.23 points (1.24%) to close at 2,059.19, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index gained 237.28 points (0.49%) to close at 48,409.04.
The 10-year Treasury note decreased 1/32, bringing the yield to 3.900%. The 30-year Treasury bond rose 1/32, bringing the yield to 4.048%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1831, Charles Darwin set sail on the HMS Beagle, beginning the voyage on which he would formulate his theory of evolution. In 1901, German American film actress Marlene Dietrich, who starred in many Hollywood films, was born. In 1932, the internal passport system, previously denounced by Vladimir Lenin as one of the worst stigmas of tsarist backwardness and despotism, was reinstated in the Soviet Union by Joseph Stalin. In 1949, four years after nationalist revolutionary leader Sukarno had declared Indonesia’s independence, formal sovereignty over the country was transferred from the Dutch to the short-lived federal United States of Indonesia. In 2007, Pakistani politician Benazir Bhutto, the first woman leader of a Muslim nation in modern history, was assassinated in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, while campaigning for upcoming parliamentary elections. In 2015, painter, sculptor and printmaker Ellsworth Kelly—who was a leading exponent of the hard-edge style, in which abstract contours are sharply and precisely defined—died in Spencertown, New York.
