In the week ending December 21, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 219,000, a decrease of 1,000 from the previous week’s unrevised level of 220,000, the Department of Labor reported. The 4-week moving average was 226,500, an increase of 1,000 from the previous week’s unrevised average of 225,500.

Interest on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 6.85% for the week ending December 26, up from last week when it averaged 6.72%, Freddie Mac reported. A year ago at this time, the 30-year FRM averaged 6.61%. Interest on a 15-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 6.00%, up from last week when it averaged 5.92%. A year ago at this time, the 15-year FRM averaged 5.93%.
MARKET MIRROR
Thursday, the Dow rose 27.77 points (0.066%) to close at 43,325.80, the Nasdaq fell 10.77 points (0.054%) to close at 20,020.36 and the S&P 500 dropped 2.45 points (0.041%) to close at 6,037.59. The Russell 2000 rose 20.34 points (0.90%) to close at 2,280.19, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 11.16 points (0.018%) to close at 60,517.54.

The 10-year Treasury note was unchanged, bringing the yield to 4.589%. The 30-year Treasury bond decreased 2/32, bringing the yield to 4.773%.
