A Path to Roth IRAs for High Earners?
Under Roth individual retirement account (IRA) rules, only singles whose modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) is $131,000 or less in 2015, or married couples whose combined MAGI is $193,000 or less, can contribute to a Roth IRA. However, a couple of months ago, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced a rule that would allow certain high earners to earmark some of their savings as Roth after-tax amounts, according to a speaker at a webinar sponsored by retirement plan advisory firm Cafaro Greenleaf.  Read more >

Yesterday, the Dow was down 55.16 points (0.31%) at 17,983.07, the NASDAQ fell 29.47 points (0.61%) to 4,777.44, and the S&P 500 lost 10.23 points (0.49%) to finish at 2,080.34. The Russell 2000 decreased 6.06 points (0.50%) to 1,213.05, and the Wilshire 5000 closed 101.35 points (0.46%) lower at 21,876.17.

 

On the NYSE, 3.2 billion shares traded, with a 1.6 to 1 ratio of decliners to advancers. On the NASDAQ, 2.7 billion shares changed hands, with 1.4 declining issues for every advancing issue.

 

The price of the 10-year Treasury note was up 4/32, bringing its yield down to 2.189%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond increased 10/32, decreasing its yield to 2.758%.

Still Potential for Growth of ETF Use in 401(k)s
Chuck Self, chief investment officer (CIO) and chief operating officer (COO) at iSectors LLC, an exchange-traded fund (ETF) strategist that provides model portfolios to 401(k) plans, admits that ETFs remain a small portion of the overall defined contribution (DC) investing pool, but he is optimistic about the future of the product class among retirement investors—especially those working with specialist advisers. “The whole idea of getting ETFs into 401(k) plans was purely a conversation until a few recordkeepers actually started to allow ETFs to be choices on their platforms,” he tells PLANSPONSOR. “It is a relatively recent event that has occurred in just the past few years.”   Read more >

Nearly half (49%) of respondents to the 6th annual New Year’s Resolution Survey from Allianz Life Insurance Company of North America say health/wellness is the most important focus area for the upcoming year, up from 43% in 2013. Only 30% of respondents chose financial stability as their top focus for 2015. This lower level of interest in finances is consistent with the decline in the percentage of Americans who said they will include financial planning in their New Year’s resolutions for the upcoming year.   Read more >
