Friday, Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 227,000 in November, and the unemployment rate
changed little at 4.2%, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. Employment
trended up in health care, leisure and hospitality, government, and social assistance. Retail
trade lost jobs.

Thursday, the Department of Labor will issue its initial jobless claims report, and Freddie Mac will update average mortgage rates for the week.
MARKET MIRROR
Friday, the Dow fell 123.19 points (0.28%) to close at 44,642.52, the Nasdaq rose 159.05 points (0.81%) to close at 19,859.77 and the S&P 500 rose 10.74 points (0.18%) to close at 6,085.85. The Russell 2000 rose 12.83 points (0.54%) to close at 2,408.99, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 140.92 (0.23%) to close 61,376.91.

The 10-year Treasury note increased 2/32, bringing to yield to 4.152%. The 30-year Treasury bond increased 1/31, bringing the yield to 4.335%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1961, Tanganyika became independent, with Julius Nyerere as its first prime minister, and in 1964 the territory united with the island of Zanzibar to form Tanzania.
