Wednesday, the Dow fell 317.01 points (0.82%) to close at 38,150.30, the Nasdaq fell 345.89 points (2.23%) to close at 15,164.01 and the S&P 500 fell 79.32 points (1.61%) to close at 4,845.65. The Russell 2000 fell 48.89 points (2.45%) to close at 1,947.34, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index fell 833.73 points (1.68%) to close at 48,769.87.

The 10-year Treasury note rose 31/32, bringing the yield to 3.920%. The 30-year Treasury bond rose 1 5/32, bringing the yield to 4.173%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1790, the first session of the Supreme Court of the U.S. was held in New York City. In 1884, the first of 10 volumes of the Oxford English Dictionary was published in London, the final volume being published April 19, 1928. In 1902, writer Langston Hughes, one of the foremost interpreters to the world of the Black experience in the U.S., was born. In 1923, the private army of Blackshirts that had helped Benito Mussolini come to power in Italy was officially transformed into a national militia, the Voluntary Fascist Militia for National Security. In 1946, Norwegian politician and diplomat Trygve Lie was elected the first secretary-general of the U.N. In 1960, protesting a segregated lunch counter at a Woolworth’s in Greensboro, North Carolina, four African Americans began a sit-in; its success led to a wider sit-in movement throughout the South. In 1979, the spacecraft Voyager 1 photographed Jupiter from a distance of 20.3 million miles. In 2003, while returning to Earth from an orbital mission, the U.S. space shuttle Columbia broke up catastrophically at an altitude of about 40 miles over Texas, killing all seven crew members. In 2004, in perhaps the most controversial halftime show in Super Bowl history, pop singer Janet Jackson experienced a “wardrobe malfunction” when part of her bustier was ripped off by Justin Timberlake; some argued it was accidental, while others said premeditated. In 2009, Icelandic politician Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir was sworn in as the country’s prime minister, the first woman to hold that post in Iceland and the world’s first openly gay head of a national government. In 2013, politician Ed Koch—who had served as mayor of New York City, earning a reputation for tenacity and brashness—died at age 88. In 2021, the military seized power in Myanmar, ousting the country’s de facto leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, who remains imprisoned.
