Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 143,000 in January, and the unemployment rate edged down to 4.0%, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. Job gains occurred in health care, retail trade, and social assistance. Employment declined in the mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction industry.

Friday, the Dow fell 444.23 points (0.99%) to close at 44,303.40, the Nasdaq fell 268.59 points (1.36%) to close at 19,523.40 and the S&P 500 fell 57.58 points (0.95%) to close at 6,025.99. The Russell 2000 fell 27.41 points (1.19%) to close at 2,279.71, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index fell 578.54 points (0.95%) to close at 60,611.04.
The 10-year Treasury note decreased 4/32, bringing the yield to 4.497%. The 30-year Treasury bond decreased 31/32, bringing the yield to 4.697%.
In the week ending February 7, the Dow fell 0.54%, the Nasdaq fell 0.53% and the S&P 500 fell 0.24%. The Russell 2000 fell 0.35%, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index finished 0.27% lower.

ON THIS DATE: In 1957, author Laura Ingalls Wilder, who wrote the popular Little House series of children’s books, died at age 90. In 1962, U.S. airman Francis Gary Powers, the captured pilot of the U-2 plane that had been downed by the Soviet Union and who was later convicted of espionage, was exchanged for jailed Soviet informant Rudolph Abel. In 1990, the spacecraft Galileo flew past Venus on its way to Jupiter. In 1996, world chess champion Garry Kasparov began a six-round match against Deep Blue, a chess-playing computer built by IBM, in which Kasparov claimed a 4-2 victory. In 2005, Arthur Miller—who was recognized as one of the most important playwrights of the mid-20th century—died at age 89. In 2014, actress and diplomat Shirley Temple—who cheered Depression-era moviegoers when she was a child star and the top Hollywood box-office attraction from 1935 to 1939—died at age 85.
