Monday, the Dow rose 125.69 points (0.33%) to close at 38,797.38, the Nasdaq fell 48.12 points (0.30%) to close at 15,942.55 and the S&P 500 fell 4.77 points (0.09%) to close at 5,021.84. The Russell 2000 rose 35.27 points (1.75%) to close at 2,045.26, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 22.14 points (0.044%) to close at 50,600.06.
The 10-year Treasury note fell 2/32, bringing the yield to 4.186%. The 30-year Treasury bond fell 2/32, bringing the yield to 4.386%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1883, German composer Richard Wagner, whose operas and music had a revolutionary influence on the course of Western classical music, died in Venice at age 69. In 1935, Bruno Hauptmann was convicted of kidnapping and murdering the 20-month-old son of Charles and Anne Morrow Lindbergh; he received the death penalty. In 1950, British musician Peter Gabriel, the lead singer of the progressive rock band Genesis before launching a successful solo career, was born. In 1960, France detonated its first atomic bomb in the Sahara desert. In 1997, The Dow Jones Industrial Average first eclipsed the 7,000 mark, then closed at 7,022.44. In 2000, The last Peanuts comic strip was published in newspapers, just hours after the death of creator Charles Schulz. In 2002, Scottish Parliament passed the Protection of Wild Mammals Bill, which made it illegal to hunt wild mammals with dogs, effectively outlawing foxhunting in Scotland. In 2008, Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd apologized to the Australian Aboriginal peoples for abuses they had suffered under earlier administrations.
