In the week ending February 8, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 213,000, a decrease of 7,000 from the previous week’s revised level of 220,000, the Department of Labor reported. The four-week moving average was 216,000, a decrease of 1,000 from the previous week’s revised average of 217,000.
Interest on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 6.87% for the week ending February 13, down from last week when it averaged 6.89%, Freddie Mac reported. A year ago at this time, the 30-year FRM averaged 6.77%. Interest on a 15-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 6.09%, up from last week when it averaged 6.05%. A year ago at this time, the 15-year FRM averaged 6.12%.

Thursday, the Dow rose 342.87 points (0.77%) to close at 44,711.43, the Nasdaq rose 295.69 points (1.50%) to close at 19,945.64 and the S&P 500 rose 63.10 points (1.04%) to close at 6,115.07. The Russell 2000 rose 26.30 points (1.17%) to close at 2,282.18, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 635.21 points (1.05%) to close at 61,391.78.
The 10-year Treasury note increased 8/32, bringing the yield to 4.534%. The 30-year Treasury bond increased 1 2/32, bringing the yield to 4.762%.

Advisers named to the list will be celebrated at the PLANADVISER Industry Leader Awards in May. The deadline for entries is February 18.

ON THIS DATE: In 1876, Alexander Graham Bell applied for a patent for the telephone. In 1920, with the establishment of women’s suffrage in the U.S., Carrie Chapman Catt formed the League of Women Voters in Chicago. In 1989, Ayatolla Ruhollah Khomeini of Iran issued a fatwa and offered a bounty for the assassination of author Salman Rushdie, whose novel “The Satanic Verses” Khomeini denounced as blasphemous. In 1991, the psychological thriller “The Silence of the Lambs” was released in American theaters; widely regarded as a classic, it won five Academy Awards, including best picture, actor (Anthony Hopkins), actress (Jodie Foster) and director (Jonathan Demme). In 2005, Steve Chen, Chad Hurley and Jawed Karim registered YouTube, a website for sharing videos; it would become hugely popular, with more than 1 billion unique users visiting the site every month. In 2018, amid scandals and corruption allegations, South African President Jacob Zuma resigned and was later replaced by Cyril Ramaphosa.
