Sales of new single-family houses in January were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 923,000, according to estimates released jointly by the U.S. Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development. This is 4.3% above the revised December rate of 885,000 and is 19.3% above the January 2020 estimate of 774,000.

Wednesday, the Dow gained 424.51 points (1.35%) to finish at 31,961.86, the Nasdaq closed 132.77 points (0.99%) higher at 13,597.97, and the S&P 500 increased 44.06 points (1.14%) to 3,925.43. The Russell 2000 was up 33.31 points (1.48%) at 2,284.38, and the Wilshire 5000 climbed 478.91 points (1.16%) to 41,763.02.

The price of the 10-year Treasury note was down 4/32, increasing its yield to 1.394%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond decreased 1 1/32, bringing its yield up to 2.239%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1791, First Bank of the United States was chartered by Congress and signed by President George Washington.
