New orders for manufactured durable goods in December increased $0.4 billion or 0.2% to $245.3 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau announced. This increase, up eight consecutive months, followed a 1.2% November increase. Excluding transportation, new orders increased 0.7%. Excluding defense, new orders increased 0.5%. Machinery, also up eight consecutive months, drove the increase, $0.8 billion or 2.4% to $33.2 billion.

Interest on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 2.73% for the week ending February 4, unchanged from last week. A year ago at this time, the 30-year FRM averaged 3.45%. Interest on a 15-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 2.21%, up slightly from last week when it averaged 2.20%. A year ago at this time, the 15-year FRM averaged 2.97%.

In the week ending January 30, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims for unemployment insurance was 779,000, a decrease of 33,000 from the previous week’s revised level of 812,000, the Labor Department reported. The four-week moving average was 848,250, a decrease of 1,250 from the previous week’s revised average of 849,500.

Thursday, the Dow was up 322.26 points (1.08%) at 31,055.86, the NASDAQ gained 167.20 points (1.23%) to finish at 13,777.74, and the S&P 500 increased 41.57 points (1.09%) to 3,871.74. The Russell 2000 climbed 42.72 points (1.98%) to 2,202.42, and the Wilshire 5000 closed 486.39 points (1.19%) higher at 41,214.93.

The price of the 10-year Treasury note was up 1/32, decreasing its yield to 1.133%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond was down 1/32, increasing its yield to 1.933%.
