Wednesday, the Dow rose 317.24 points (0.71%) to close at 44,873.28, the Nasdaq rose 38.32 points (0.19%) to close at 19,692.33 and the S&P 500 rose 23.60 points (0.39%) to close at 6,061.48. The Russell 2000 rose 26.03 points (1.14%), and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 268.91 points (0.44%) to close at 61,010.65.

The 10-year Treasury note increased 28/32, bringing the yield to 4.432%. The 30-year Treasury bond increased 1 3/32, bringing the yield to 4.663%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1862, Union naval commodore Andrew Foote, leading a flotilla of ironclads, captured Fort Henry, Tennessee, a strategic Confederate position during the Civil War. In 1895, baseball player Babe Ruth, whose home run hitting helped make him one of the most celebrated athletes in American sports, was born. In 1932, French film director François Truffaut, whose attacks on established filmmaking techniques paved the way for the movement known as New Wave, was born. In 1945, singer-songwriter Bob Marley—who achieved stardom by blending early ska, rock steady and reggae forms into an electrifying rock-influenced hybrid—was born. In 1993, tennis player Arthur Ashe, the first Black man to win a Grand Slam championship, died of AIDS-related pneumonia. In 2014, comedian Jay Leno hosted his last episode of “The Tonight Show;” he had previously retired in 2009 but returned the following year.
