Interest rates for a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 3.45%, down from last week when it averaged 3.51, according to Freddie Mac. A year ago at this time, the 30-year FRM averaged 4.41%. Interest rates for a 15-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 2.97%, down from last week when it averaged 3%. A year ago at this time, the 15-year FRM averaged 3.84%.
In the week ending February 1, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims for unemployment insurance was 202,000, a decrease of 15,000 from the previous week’s revised level of 217,000, the Labor Department reported. The four-week moving average was 211,750, a decrease of 3,000 from the previous week’s revised average of 214,750.

The Dow gained 88.92 points (0.30%) to finish at 29,379.77, the NASDAQ increased 63.47 points (0.67%) to 9,572.15, and the S&P 500 was up 11.09 points (0.33%) at 3,345.78. The Russell 2000 was down 4.46 points (0.27%) at 1,677.46, and the Wilshire 5000 closed 88.40 points (0.26%) higher at 34,012.20.
The price of the 10-year Treasury note was up 1/32, decreasing its yield to 1.645%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond increased 7/32, bringing its yield down to 2.112%.
