Wednesday, the Dow dropped 207.68 (0.61%) to 33,949.01, the Nasdaq fell 203.27 (1.68%) to 11,910.52 and the S&P 500 fell 46.14 (1.11%) to 4,117.86. The Russell 2000 closed down 30.01 (1.52%) at 1,942.60 and the Wilshire fell 466.44 (1.12%) to 41,117.99.

The price of the 10-year Treasury note fell 2/32, bringing the yield to 3.621%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond fell 1/32, bringing the yield to 3.674%.

In 1825, after no presidential candidate received a majority of electoral votes in the election of 1824, the House of Representatives voted to elect John Quincy Adams—who won fewer votes than Andrew Jackson in the popular election—as  president of the United States. Adams was the son of John Adams, the second president of the United States. In 1849, Laura Clay, the co-founder and first president of the Kentucky Equal Rights Association and one of the most important suffragists in the South, was born. In 1942, Congress pushed ahead standard time for the United States by one hour in each time zone, imposing daylight-saving time—called at the time “war time.” In 1943, the Word War II Battle of Guadalcanal ended with an Allied victory over Japan. In 1944, author Alice Walker, a Pulitzer Prize winner for her novel ”The Color Purple,” was born. In 1960, the official groundbreaking ceremony was held for the Hollywood Walk of Fame, with the first star dedicated on the historic walkway to actress Joanne Woodward, an Academy Award winner for film “The Three Faces of Eve.” In 2002, Princess Margaret—King George VI’s second daughter and the younger sister of Queen Elizabeth II—died in London.
