Monday, the Dow gained 268.91 points (0.80%) to close at 33,973,01, the Nasdaq increased 189.04 points (1.76%) to close at 10,931.67 and the S&P 500 increased 50.36 points (1.28%) to close at 3,969.61. The Russell 2000 gained 21.40 points (1.17%) to close at 1,844.05 and the Wilshire 5000 increased 519.96 points (1.33%) to close at 39,470.43.

The price of the 10-year Treasury note decreased 3/32, bringing the yield to 3.541%. The price of the 30-year Treasury bond decreased 3/32, bringing the yield to 3.672%.

ON THIS DATE: In 1773, the oldest public museum in the United States was established in colonial Charleston, South Carolina. In 1932, Hattie Ophelia Caraway became the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate. In 1966, the live-action television series “Batman” premiered on ABC. It starred Adam West as the Caped Crusader and Burt Ward as Robin. In 1969, at the Orange Bowl in Miami, the New York Jets of the American Football League defeated the NFL’s Baltimore Colts, 16-7, in Super Bowl III—a result considered one of the biggest upsets in sports history. Days earlier, Jets quarterback Joe Namath guaranteed a victory by New York, an 18-point underdog. In 1971, television series “All in the Family” debuted on CBS; the sitcom became known for its frank and satirical treatment of sensitive or important topics. In July 2005, the U.S. space probe Deep Impact was launched, and in July it shot an 810-pound mass into the nucleus of the comet Tempel 1 in order to study its cometary structure. In 2010, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake devastated Haiti, especially capital city Port-au-Prince, killing more than 200,000 people, leaving more than 1 million homeless and touching off a massive international relief effort.
