ECONOMIC EVENTS
In December, the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers increased 0.3%, seasonally adjusted, and rose 3.4% over the last 12 months, not seasonally adjusted, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. The index for all items less food and energy increased 0.3% in December; up 3.9% over the year.

In the week ending January 6, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 202,000, a decrease of 1,000 from the previous week’s revised level of 203,000, the Department of Labor reported. The four-week moving average was 207,750, a decrease of 250 from the previous week’s revised average of 208,000.

Interest on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 6.66% for the week ending January 11, up from last week when it averaged 6.62%, according to Freddie Mac. A year ago at this time, the 30-year FRM averaged 6.33%. Interest on a 15-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 5.87%, down from last week when it averaged 5.89%. A year ago at this time, the 15-year FRM averaged 5.52%.
MARKET MIRROR
Thursday, the Dow rose 15.29 points (0.04%) to close at 37,711.02, the Nasdaq rose 0.54 points (0.00%) to close at 14,970.19 and the S&P 500 fell 3.21 points (0.07%) to close at 4,780.24. The Russell 2000 lost 14.80 points (0.75%) to close at 1,955.46, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index lost 59.38 points (0.12%) to close at 48,222.42.

The 10-year Treasury note increased 27/32, bringing the yield to 3.972%. The 30-year Treasury bond increased 6/32, bringing the yield to 4.174%.
