In December, the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers rose 0.4%, seasonally adjusted, and rose 2.9% over the last 12 months, not seasonally adjusted, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported.

Wednesday, the Dow rose 703.27 points (1.65%) to close at 43,221.55, the Nasdaq rose 466.84 points (2.45%) to close at 19,511.23 and the S&P 500 rose 107.00 points (1.83%) to close at 5,949.91. The Russell 2000 rose 44.06 points (1.99%) to close at 2,263.29, and the FT Wilshire 5000 Index rose 1,075.01 points (1.83%) to close at 59,784.25.

The 10-year Treasury note increased 32/32, bringing the yield to 4.657%. The 30-year Treasury bond increased 1 27/32, bringing the yield to 4.875%.

In 2017, astronaut Eugene Cernan, the last person to walk on the Moon, died at age 82.
